2017 Ford Focus Review

The 2017 Ford Focus comes as either a hatchback or a sedan. However there are a number of trims to choose from including S, SE, SEL or Titanium plus the Focus ST, the Focus RS, and the Focus Electric. With this wide assortment of trims and powertrains there is also a wide assortment of price ranges for this compact vehicle. Simply put, there is something for everybody in the 2017 Focus lineup.

The base 4 door S trim sedan has a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, and a 5-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automatic transmission is optional on the S trim level. There is no hatchback model available in the S trim. Regular unleaded gasoline is required to make the I-4 engine operate. It can develop 159-hp and achieve a fuel economy of 25 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway. The SYNC infotainment system comes as standard equipment along with front power windows, multiple air bags, plus a whole lot more.

The Ford Focus SE sedan is a step above the S trim level. The SE trim allows the rear-seat passengers to have power windows instead of the rear manual crank windows on the S trim. In place of the standard 2.0 liter engine, the SE has a turbocharged 1.0 liter 3-cylinder engine that develops 123 hp with torque of 125 ft-lb. It has either a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission. There is also a driver information display, satellite radio, rear-seat heat vents, cruise control, a 6-speaker sound system, and a center armrest with a convenient storage compartment.

The SE hatchback keeps the standard 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine. It adds larger 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, cruise control, and Ford’s MyKey system. There is also a 60/40 split folding rear bench seat for added cargo space and a rear spoiler. It also comes with body colored exterior door handles and mirrors, a trip computer, power rear windows, rear air vents, auxiliary controls mounted on the steering wheel, and satellite radio with a 6-speaker sound system.

Next up is the Ford Focus SEL Sedan. This trim level adds rear disc brakes, 17-inch machined aluminum wheels that have black painted pockets, LED running lights, foglights, a sunroof, rear parking sensors, dual-zone electronic automatic climate control, a Sony audio system with 10-speakers, and LED signature lighting with dedicated daytime running lights (DRLs). This trim also features an upgraded SYNC 3 infotainment system that replaces the standard display with an 8-inch LCD touchscreen.

You will find that the Focus SEL Hatchback has plenty of goodies since it is just one step below the top of the line titanium trim. It has the usual 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission and front wheel drive. The engine can develop 160 hp with torque of 146 ft-lb, and the fuel economy is a very respectable 26 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. This vehicle comes with 17-inch wheels, a moonroof, rear disc brakes, rear defrost, power windows, multiple air bags, and many more features.

The top-level Titanium sedan features 17 inch aluminum wheels, front bucket seats that are leather-trimmed and have an with 8-way power driver adjustment, ambient lighting, steering wheel that is leather wrapped, and chrome exterior accents. The seats and door trims are nicely tailored with the satin chrome in the Titanium. The Titanium seats are plusher and deliver good back and thigh support. Options include automatic parking assistance which means it parks itself with the use of the camera system.

The Titanium hatchback also features 17 inch aluminum wheels, heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and exterior accents of chrome. The optional Titanium Technology Package includes the Blind Spot Information System or BLIS with rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beam headlamp assist, and lane-keeping alert. Titanium models also feature leather upholstery, rear-seat center armrest, heated front seats, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, and a proximity key that has remote start.

In the summer of 2012 Ford introduced the Focus ST. This high-performance vehicle comes as a 5-seat, 4-door hatchback with front wheel drive. The 2017 ST has an EcoBoost turbocharged 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder engine that is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. There is no option for an automatic transmission with the ST. This auto can develop 252 hp with torque of 270 lb-ft. The ST can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, and it has a top speed of 150 mph. The EPA fuel economy is 22 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. Perks include 19-inch alloy wheels and Recaro bucket seats in the front.

Finally the Focus RS is available in the United States. It had been sold in Europe for years but that all changes for the current 2017 model year. It is equipped with a turbocharged 2.3 liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine that can develop 350 hp with torque of 350 lb-ft. Only a 6-speed manual transmission is offered on the RS. The RS can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 4.7 seconds. All four wheels receive power due to the brand new Ford Performance Torque-Vectoring All-Wheel-Drive system that dispenses power to front and rear as well as left and right for maximum benefit. This is the only model with All-Wheel-Drive. The RS is also fitted with Drive Modes that include Drift Mode and Launch Control.

Last but not least is the Ford Focus Electric Hatchback for 2017. The Electric is based on the premium Titanium trim level so it has all of that equipment plus recycled cloth surfaces for the seats which is ecologically friendly. This vehicle comes with a 107-kW electric motor with a 33.5 kWh liquid-cooled lithium ion battery as standard equipment. It features a 1-speed automatic transmission and an exterior charging port. There is no manual transmission and no sedan version for the Electric. GPS navigation is an option as is Eco-friendly leather trim. The Focus Electric will allow you to do without gasoline entirely. Many people will enjoy not having to fill up every week. The electric range is estimated at 115 miles which is not bad.
