2021 GMC Sierra Review

Looking for a truck that hauls all the heavy loads and does it in style with good fuel economy? If so, the upcoming 2021 GMC is worth exploring.

The 2018 GMC Sierra was fantastic and the 2021 GMC Sierra is expected to build on this package with a comfortable interior, a roaring engine, and powerful aerodynamic features. The truck should handle well with both on-road and off-road adventures.

Personalize with Colors

Customers looking to personalize their ride have a variety of options available to them, if previous iterations are any indication. There are 11 current color choices, including the standard Onyx Black. Other non-standard colors are the popular Cardinal Red as well as the stunning Satin Steel Metallic.

Trims – 1500, 2500, 3500

Trims for the 1500 include: the SLE, SLT, and Denali. The Denali has been a popular trim since its release in 2015, and previews show it continues to impress with the 2021 update.

Other trims are available for the 2500 and 3500. For example, the SLE and SLT are also available for the HD 2500 and HD 3500 and there is a 3500 Denali HD, among others.

Stylish Exterior

The 2021 Denali pickup is designed with a specific purpose in mind: getting the job done right. It’s still easy to see the recognizable square-jawed front side, which has long remained a trademark of this trim. Some newer changes as well as old favorites blend together to make this vehicle not only functional, but also stylish.

For example, it appears GMC enlarged the front-chromed grille with a wider air intake. Ventilation continues to improve the V8 engine from previous models. A look at the front reveals bi-halogen projector headlights that GMC has equipped with LED lamps. The fog light and side taillights are also impressive.

Professional Yet Comfortable Interior

Looking at the 2020 model, the 2021 version of this pickup is expected to provide high levels of comfort and luxury. Many have praised past models for the aluminum and wood accents inside the cabin for the professional touch. Along the dashboard, there were premium soft-touch materials that feel like world-class quality. For the coldest days when starting the truck, the heated steering wheel becomes an asset that keeps giving.

A Look Under the Hood

The Sierra is well-known for its monstrous engines. There are also expected to be similar choices for engines in 2021 for the 1500 as there were in past models:

  • Standard the 2020 model is the 285-horsepower. 4.3-liter V6 engine.
  • The next option up is the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, with 310 HP.
  • The next level includes two V8 5.3-liter units, with 355 HP each or a 6.2-liter with 420 HP.
  • Finally, the 2020 GMC 1500 model offers a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline six-engine with 277 HP.

Without official specs confirmed, the 2020 model options will likely remain the same for the 2021 iteration.

Predicted Fuel Economy and Towing Capacity

As with any vehicle, using a more powerful engine and/or loading up more weight onto this pickup will decrease the fuel efficiency. That being said, a fuel economy of 23 city / 30 highway for the base model is respectable for a vehicle of this size and power.

However, a powerful tow capacity at 6,600 to 9,800 lbs (with the right engine and proper towing setup for the 2020 1500 model), ranks this heavy-duty truck near the top of its class.

Entertainment and Safety Technology

The high-tech gadgetry is where the 2021 GMC Sierra stands out, if its predecessors are anything to judge by. For example, in the 2019 model, there is an 8-inch color panel touchscreen; this is an increase of one inch over its predecessor, which featured a 7-inch screen.

Meanwhile, the HD radio ensures crystal clear sound through the Bose audio systems. There are also wonderful safety features available like forward collision alert and a lane departure warning system.

We can only expect the updated 2021 model to have all of these goodies and more.

Pricing & Deals

MSRP is expected to be around $31,195 to $60,095, depending on which version you choose.

Since this vehicle is not yet released, deals are not currently available. However, signing up for the official GMC e-mail list can alert you of any upcoming deals, discounts, and coupons. You can also visit your local dealership to learn of any special offers once the vehicle is released.

Pros/Cons at a Glance

Not sure about whether this vehicle is right for you? Expected pros and cons of this yet-to-be-released vehicle include the following.

Pros

  • Latest technology available that enhances entertainment and safety
  • Excellent safety features
  • Plenty of horsepower in the engine to finish the heavy-duty jobs
  • Up to 9,800 lbs of towing power for the 1500, 14,500 lbs for both the 2500HD and 2500HD

Cons

  • Not all desirable features come standard
  • Expensive compared to some of the other trucks in its class

A Reliable Update

The GMC Sierra has long been championed as a power player in its class. 2021 hasn’t seen that change, as it does have room for improvement. For example, some desirable features don’t come standard, but rather, customers have to add them at an extra cost.

But overall, this is a dependable truck to haul stuff on heavy-duty jobs. Whether mudding off-track or something else, this heavy-duty truck is pretty impressive from start to finish.
