  1. In 1947, after India regained its independence, and Pakistan separated and became its own nation, the Maharaja of Kashmir. Hari Singh signed an interim agreement with Pakistan for continuing transport. He also signed the "Instrument of Accession" to India.
  2. The agreement began a long, unresolved series of issues between the two nations. The United Nations intervened to negotiate a cease-fire. A "line of control" was established in January 1949.
  3. In 1965, Pakistan attempted to claim Kashmir by force, triggering the India-Pakistan war of 1965. The Security Council then passed a resolution banning the supply of arms to both nations.
  4. In 1990, India imposed "direct rule", which triggered further confrontations during a tense period between the two nations. Over 100,000 Kashmiri Hindu citizens were forced to flee the valley, fearing their safety.
  5. In 1999, the Pakistani army breached the line of control, secretly moving troops into Kashmir. This sparked the Kargil war of 1999, initiated by India. The United States eventually intervened, and the Pakistan army was forced to retreat.
  6. Interestingly, even China claims control over twenty percent of Kashmir, in the northeastern part of the area, known as Aksai Chin.
