Behind every action star, you’re bound to find one one or more talented, well-trained stunt doubles. While some actors and actresses elect to do their own stunts, there are a lot of movie moments that just wouldn’t be possible, let alone safe, without the assistance of a trained professional.
So, filmmakers hire stunt doubles to perform various fight scenes, car crashes, and more, standing in for some of the most famous faces in Hollywood. From Marvel superheroes to your favorite teen heartthrobs, here are just a few actors with their strikingly-similar stunt doubles.
Charlize Theron has played many different roles, each time utilizing a unique stunt double. In this picture, she is posing with Alicia Vela-Bailey (who was her double in her most recent movie Crossfire). The music video for Crossfire by Brandon Flowers featured Charlize Theron/Alicia Vela-Bailey fighting sword-wielding masked figures in order to save the singer. Charlize Theron always plays an impeccable protagonist, thanks to the help of people like Alicia Vela-Bailey.
John Travolta has been playing many different roles over the course of his career, ranging from doing stunts for Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction to being the mother of Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. He hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down anytime soon either; he plays Jack Vincennes in The Forger and his stunt double Nick Loren also stars as a minor character in the film.
Now you see him, now you don’t! Actor Mark Ruffalo poses with his Now You See Me stunt double Anthony Molinari. A movie about magicians seems like an unlikely candidate for being high energy – but this particular flick has enough tricks up its sleeve that required a stunt performer like Molearri in order to pull them off. From split second reactions and back flips, every element was tricky and needed someone who was quick on their feet. And here he is – standing right beside one of Hollywood’s most handsome leading men ever to grace the silver screen; himself.
You’ll need to take a second look when looking at Jennifer Lopez’s stunt double. Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you, Lopez did have a male stunt double for her Follow the Leader music video – Daniel Arroyo. It showcases some complicated stunts and moves that only someone with such skills can handle – he definitely deserves an award! However, this makes me disappointed because I thought she was just too good to be real– what an inspiration!
It was strange watching Patrick Dempsey in action films with a stunt double. Normally, I don’t see him anywhere near an action movie but he features in one of my favorite movies ever; Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It may seem weird since we’re talking about an actor who never does stunts but it’s understandable when you look at this picture from 2011 where he can be seen doing just that. Alongside his stunt double, Patrick sports matching clothes which are torn and patched up to make them look more realistic.
Here’s another one for this bunch of doppelgangers. In the 2015 movie Hot Pursuit, starring Reese Witherspoon, she played a policewoman. Of course, every cop role will feature scenes of chasing after cars or parkour-filled running sequences— so hiring a stunt double is necessary here too. Whoever cast Marney Eng as Witherspoon’s double did an excellent job if you ask me.
Shia LaBeouf seems like a new person when you compare him to the Transformer movies. He stands next to his stuntman in matching clothes, dirty from their work.
Our favorite sparkling vampire posed with his Twilight stunt double, Paul Darnell. Even if you don’t care for either of the films, it’s hard to deny the amazing stunts. Did you see how perfectly he matched up? And doesn’t this guy look like he has great hair?
Apparently, there are many people that work as stunt doubles in Hollywood. This double was also featured in Divergent when she played Shailene Woodley’s doppelgänger. Her name is Alicia Vela-Bailey, the same woman who also acted as a stand-in for Charlize Theron
The Forgotten is a suitably cool name for an unreleased TV show starring Christian Slater. Based off of solving murders that the police can’t, it aired only once on ABC and lasted one season before being canceled due to low ratings.
Regina King played a recurring part in the HBO television series Southland, where she portrayed a detective. Unlike other cop dramas which focus on solving cases or going through step-by-step procedures for crime scenes, Southland instead focuses on its characters; exploring their personalities and private lives as well. Regina King is pictured here next to her double, Dartenea Bryant – they make a great team!
Who would ever forget about Uma Thurman’s iconic yellow Kill Bill suit? Look at her next to a stuntwoman named Zoe Bell. With their identical faces, it is clear these two are related! Although she may be famous as just a stunt woman, she also acts and has been in productions such as Final Destination, Death Proof, and Iron Man 3.
Behind every superhero is an equally-skilled stunt double. And you can see the perfect example of this phenomenon when comparing these photos of Chris Evans and his stunt double in costume while filming Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Clad in matching clothes, they look so much alike it’s easy to mistake them for each other at first glance! But wait! Look over there—isn’t that really Steve Rogers/Captain America?
Did you know that Kate Winslet had a stunt double for her role in Titanic? Here she is! Sarah Franzl is Winslet’s gorgeous double. Franzl has quite the resume – having appeared in films such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Fast and Furious 6, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
With great power comes a need for responsibility, and with large amounts of responsibility comes a team of people to aid you in doing all you can do. With such big shoes to fill when it came down to portraying the role of Spiderman in Amazing Spiderman 2, Andrew Garfield made sure he had a stunt person take care of certain scenes – namely those involving him jumping off buildings or running from explosions. He enlisted William Spencer who is not only an expert-level at doing stunts but also has been skating professionally since he was 6 years old!
This is one of those stunt-double actor pairs that really bothers me. It was very hard to tell who was who when looking at these two because they looked so much alike! Tom Hardy’s partner, Jacob Tomuri, has also appeared in many big name productions such as Avatar and Peter Pan.
One of my favorite parts about Return of the Jedi was when Princess Leia wears a bikini and braids her hair back while she takes a break on Tatooine. Her double, Tracey Eddon, has been seen in other well-known movies like Mission: Impossible, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Doctor Strange.
One particular stunt actor, Stuart Wilson, is often used by many actors including Bruce Willis. He has worked on films such as A Good Day to Die Hard, Looper and The Expendables 2 with Willis. His skills extend beyond just performing stunts; he also coordinates them and choreographs fights.
Although Tom Cruise utilized a stunt double in the film Knight and Day, he actually did perform some of his own stunts, including that notable motorcycle scene. However, he left the more difficult stuff to his double, Casey O’Neill. His experience ranges from movies like Westworld and other popular tv shows like Twin Peaks.
In the 2014 remake of Annie, 10 year old Quvenzhane Wallis played the titular character. However, her body double was in fact an adult woman. It may have been because Quvenzhane’s age limits how many hours she can work daily; but regardless, this adult woman does act as a great stand-in for the lead actress.
The movie Logan was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2017, and yet it could not have been possible without Hugh Jackman’s stunt double, Eddie Davenport. It seems to have paid off – Logan is one of the best reviewed X-Men movies of all time. Davenport has also done stunts for other Hollywood films such as Real Steel and Captain America: The First Avenger.
Remember when Hollywood tried its hand at making movies about zombies? It started off with World War Z, where Brad Pitt played an integral part. He had a set-double named David Paterson who looked just like him – even down to their matching hairlines and sideburns!
X-Men: First Class actress January Jones was spotted with her stunt double in 2010. Jones’ character, Emma Frost/ White Queen, is ice cold so it makes sense that she needed a suit to match. They both had white outfits on with knee-high boots and hats to cover up from the sun.
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar is well known for her starring role as Buffy Summers in the cult classic television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It may come as no surprise then, that she needed to employ a stunt double from time to time.
When shooting the last movie in the Harry Potter series, Emma Watson needed a few stunt doubles because of her hectic schedule.
Taylor Johnson and his stunt double have been spotted in London; both men are sporting a large ivory tooth on their neck. They’re dressed in dark slacks, white button-ups, and are busy filming Sony Marvel’s latest superhero flick – Kraven the Hunter which follows Spider-Adversary Man’s Kraven (Sergei Kravinoff), a skilled hunter and tracker.
Burt Reynolds’ belief that actors should perform their own stunts in movies has given them exciting moments. This can be seen most evidently when he drove during Smokey and the Bandit, which made it more bearable to watch. One moment where he regretted performing a stunt involved filming Deliverance, when he had fallen from a waterfall.
Daniel Craig may have reached his limit with playing James Bond, at least partly because he is now less interested in risking his life to pull off death-defying feats. The actor gave the dapper spy a gritty edge and makes audiences feel closer to him – even if they’re sitting comfortably at home watching him do all those stunts. When viewers first saw Daniel Craig’s mouth break after taking a punch while filming Casino Royale, they felt more connected than ever before.
Jackie Chan is one of the most prolific actors, performing his own stunt work. Some remarkable feats are scaling a clock tower (Project A), sliding down the Willemswerf building in Rotterdam while 25 stories high, and jumping off a balcony in a shopping center (Police Story). Jackie Chan’s career came close to being cut short after he sustained injuries from an accident during filming for Armour of God (1986) when he hit his head on some scaffolding steel bars.
Kurt Lott, the famed stunt coordinator and creator of the tricking apparatuses FIREGEL and NAKEDGEL, was interviewed by Bored Panda. Lott is a member of SAG/AFTRA, the Stuntmen’s Association of Motion Pictures, and Hollywood Stuntworks. He eagerly shared what it takes to become a great stunt performer. To be an excellent double, you need training for physicality; acting; and performing. One needs to learn how well their actors are capable of conveying the action they need to perform before padding them up accordingly.
Kurt had participated in all kinds of extreme activities while growing up, so it only made sense that he would be ready for anything once he got on set. Whether it was hang gliding, scuba diving, motocross driving, desert racing or drag-racing; nothing could faze him. This vast experience lead to his successful stunt career.
Eunice Huthart played Angelina Jolie’s stunt double in Tomb Raider. One of Hollywood’s most well-known actors, Jolie is best known for roles such as Mrs. Smith and Lara Croft–strong yet completely independent characters that are both believable because they can’t damage her delicate face on set.
In the film Tracers, actor Taylor Lautner met his stunt double who he plays a werewolf in the Twilight series. Previously he has worked as an actor but now he is well known for playing Jacob Black in the Twilight series. His ability to become a werewolf has come with some consequences; notably requiring him to get a stunt double for some scenes due to injuries sustained during these fights with vampires.
In the early 1970s, Lynda Carter may have been the most popular woman on Earth. After being crowned Miss World USA 1972 she went onto become Wonder Woman herself! Jeannie Epper is one of the best-known stunt actors in Hollywood. She has doubled for Lynda Carter from playing Wonder Woman too! And she wouldn’t be so successful if she wasn’t talented at acting, singing, and songwriting; which all makes her a perfect fit for this job!
As an actor, Ruffalo has seen a lot of action. He plays The Incredible Hulk, who assisted him greatly in filming the role – you never know what they are going to do next because they are so versatile. For example, now he is one of the producers and directors in Now You See Me! In order to make sure things go smoothly during stunts where he needs someone else’s help, Hollywood uses Ruffalo’s double Anthony Molinari for stunt work scenes too.
