History Facts - NASA
NASA was originally established, in 1958, as a civilian agency, independent of the United States federal government. The president at the time was Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In 1972, NASA released a series of satellites into space, called "Landsat", with the purpose of taking a photograph of the Earth's Surface from outer space.
The headquarters of NASA is situated in Washington D.C. NASA also has nine centers, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and seven test centers located across the United States, in various states.
More than 17,000 people work for NASA, many of whom are hired by the government. In addition to astronauts, scientists, and engineers, NASA also hires writers, teachers, and even lawyers.
Did you know that the Hollywood film, "Armageddon," was once shown to fresh NASA staff for the sole purpose of identifying inaccuracies? Interestingly, 168 of them were detected.
On July 20, 1969, NASA launched a successful mission that resulted in Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin setting foot on the moon.
