Travel Facts - Things to know when going to Germany

  1. If you're going on a trip to Germany anytime soon, keep in mind that Germans are very fond of rules, and they expect tourists to respect and adhere to these regulations. If they see you jaywalking, for example, expect to get disapproving eyes and shaking heads.
  2. While most Germans do speak English, it's still highly recommended that you learn some German since road and shop signs are written in German. Some useful German words might be danke = thank you, guten morgen = good morning, and guten tag = good day.
  3. Germans love their sausage. In fact, some small towns don't even offer much else apart from sausage, meat, and bread. Germans are also known for their beer. When in Germany, expect to see people drinking beer anytime, anywhere. Even during lunch break.
  4. In Germany, the concept of being fashionably late does not exist. Punctuality is a huge part of their etiquette. Germans are prompt all the time, so whether it's an important business meeting or a friendly date, make sure to be on time.
  5. Germans take recycling very seriously. In fact, most of their supermarkets have recycling machines where you simply throw your bottles in and get a small fee back. Make sure to check your bottle labels to see whether it is recyclable or not.
