History Facts - The Cambodian Genocide

  1. Under the leadership of Pol Pot, the Cambodian Genocide was carried out by the communist group, Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979. Almost 25 percent of the population was wiped out. Pol Pot wanted his country to have a fresh start.
  2. Pol Pot was hoping to create a traditional society, one free from modern influence. Peasants were the role models, and were called "old people." Those who had any form of education, such as dentists and doctors, were deemed expendable; as were those who owned factories or businesses.
  3. To carry out Pol Pot's vision of paradise, the Khmer Rouge tricked city residents into believing that Americans were going to bomb their land. This forced people to evacuate the cities to the countryside. Most of the evacuees passed away either from starvation or exhaustion.
  4. The Cambodian Genocide became known to the global community, but it did not go through sufficient investigation since the United States was hesitant to become involved in the country again, especially after its recent loss in the Vietnam War.
  5. After being ignored for years, the violence finally received international attention with the release of a Hollywood film entitled "The Killing Fields." The movie was based on the firsthand stories of survivors. The film was released only a few years after the calamity took place.
  6. In 1997, with the help of the United Nations, the ECCC was formed to try the leaders behind the Genocide. Pol Pot was sentenced to house arrest before his trial. He passed away in 1998, a year later, without ever being tried for his crimes.
